5 Secrets to Increasing Traffic to Your Website for Free

1. Update your Website Every Day. Even if you can’t post every day then move around some content, update the layout, edit some code, add an affiliate stream or anything you can think of to improve your website and keep visitors around and stay interested. Also, the more you update, the more search engine spiders will be crawling around your website.

2. Promote a Contest or Give Something Away. People love free stuff…it’s as simple as that. Create a way for both you and your visitors to benefit such as giving a free sponsored link to the 100th commenter or create a contest giving something away to someone who reviews your website. It’s a great way to get people coming back to check on the contest and participate.

3. Use Social Bookmarking. If you haven’t already, you should be signing up with all of the major players…Digg, Delicious, StumbleUpon, etc. and bookmarking your own posts. This gives you a high ranking backlink and can bring in new traffic. Don’t forget to put buttons on your site that make it easy for users of social bookmarking and news sites to add your site to their account!

4. Research Keywords While Writing Content. When you are writing a post, you should be thinking of ways to work in keywords that will help increase traffic from natural searches from Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. If your post is about “Selling Widgets” then you should be plugging that into a keyword research tool and narrowing that down to some niche searches such as “selling Blue Widgets” or “Selling Widgets on the Internet for Cash”…work in those long-tail keywords! A great free tool for this is Google’s AdWords Keyword Tool

5. Comment on Other People’s Blogs and Participate in Forums. Start showing off your knowledge about your niche in related forums or comment on someone else’s blog with your URL. If there is a post about “Baking Pies” leave a comment along the lines of “Great article. I bake pies myself and actually just posted a great recipe from my grandma at my blog, www.myblog.com”. When you participate in forums, do the same thing and always have your website in your signature.

one bookmarking site doesn’t want to promote your own site(self promotion). I was warned by Simpy about this a few weeks back.

We have the same goal Sarah, keep it up.

thx for the tip. maybe if you’re account doesn’t ONLY have your own website that might help not scream “spam!”…bookmark a ton of other websites too :) it’s a perfectly legit and white hat way to increase traffic to your site but there will always be people out there who still huff and puff.
