The UK HIPs Fiasco Jolts the Real Estate Market

Home Information Packs (HIPs) are a new reform the UK government introduced recently to help improve the home selling process and reduce the amount of properties that collapse after the sale is completed. The new process took effect June 1, 2007 which caused a flood in the market because sellers wanted to list property before the deadline to avoid regulation and the filing fees which has created an unusually saturated market with little buyers. It has now been a few months and most of the property owners who aren’t having any luck selling have decided to rent instead which has thrown the rental market off balance as well. In all, the HIP hasn’t done much other than prove what a disabilitating effect this type of government reform can do when not implemented properly.
